San José expected to get solar energy systems to run the traffic lights

The Consejo de Seguridad Vial has awarded a $1 million contract for installing 77 solar panels at as many traffic light systems in central San José.

The job went to Sistema Empresarial RC S.A., which has 300 days to do the job if the deal becomes final. The contract still needs the approval of the Contraloría General de la República.

The systems will use a backup that draws power from the electric grid if the solar energy fails, said the Consejo.

Public employees will supervise the job, the Consejo said.
