Survivors receive damages for fatal fall

The Sala Primera has held the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad responsible for the fatal fall of a worker in March 2010 and awarded his survivors 40 million colons, a bit more than $75,000.

The workplace accident was at the Proyecto Hidroeléctrico Pirrís where the employee fell from a scaffolding some 60 meters, nearly 200 feet.

The hydro project involves the construction of a high dam.

Even though the company had an occupation security plan in force, provided training and required the use of security equipment, the court still found that the electrical institute lacked effective oversight.pirris090915
