Presumed smugglers overturned their 20-foot boat off Punta Burica in extreme southwest Costa Rica, and the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública said that the crew of one of its planes spotted packages floating away from the craft.
Evenually the Policía de Fronteras and the Policía de Control de Drogas recovered 369 kilos of cocaine hidden in the boat when it was brought to shore. One man, a Colombian, was detained at the scene. Two others, shoeless and wet, came into police hands near Pavones. They, too, were Colombians.
One of the men has a record of drug trafficking in the United States, officials said.
