The Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano celebrates its 70th birthday with a free concert and show Friday at the Los Yoses facility.
The free concert in the Teatro Eugene ONeill features the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and a group of students from the University of Northern Iowa School of Music.
The Centro Cultural is best known as the place where many Costa Ricans learn English.
But more recently it has attracted an adult audience by streaming Metropolitan Opera performances live on Saturdays.
The Los Yoses facility has expanded to include one in La Sabana, Cartago and Alajuela.
The orchestra program lists popular show tunes, including selections from “West Side Story,” and the five Iowa students are offering a program called “American Broadway Spectacular.”
Their visit is part of the Promising Young Artists of the 21st Century program.
They actually are performing twice with the orchestra. The first performance is tonight, also at the Centro Cultural for guests. The 7:30 p.m. concert Friday is for the public, but those who wish to attend are asked to sign up through the Centro’s Web site HERE!
The Iowa students have three more performances in the country before returning Tuesday. The orchestra is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
