May-December marriage ended by court

A 29-year-old woman who was married briefly to an 80-year-old man carried her claim all the way to the Sala Segunda of the Corte Suprema de Justicia, which adjudicates family cases.

The court affirmed an earlier decision in favor of the man and ratified the divorce.

The key element was that the court concluded that the man was abused during the several months of his marriage and that he was denied contact with his family. He also was ailing and vulnerable to abuse, said the court.

The decision also reserved the right of the man to seek separation payments.

The woman denied the allegations that she had treated the man badly. The court also ordered a prosecutor to investigate the case.

No names were given in the summary released by the Poder Judicial.
