San José concert band to present history of tango

The country may not be Argentina, but there still is an active tango community here.

That will be demonstrated Friday when the  Banda de Conciertos de San José presents its version of tango history at the Teatro Nacional.

For many, what they know of tango was demonstrated by Al Pacino in the 1992 film “Scent of a Woman.” when he danced with Gabrielle Anwar  to “Por una Cabeza.”

The band is inviting a performance by the San Pedro-based Fantasía del Tango to expand the public’s knowledge. The dance group has been performing for more than 20 years here and even has had a gig in Argentina, the motherland of tango.

The invited director for the evening is Pablo Dell’Oca Sala of Argentina. He is director of the Banda Sinfónica de La Pampa there.

Works of  Carlos Gardel, Ángel Villoldo and Astor Piazzolla will be presented, said the band.

The show begins at 8 p.m., and there is an admission.
