While politicians in both Costa Rica and the United States debate the value of allowing citizens to possess firearms, there seems to be an increase in knife attacks here.
Knives, of course, are the low-budget weapon of choice, but they also are deadly and easy to make.
A 29-year-old inmate in La Reforma prison died Monday night after a fight inside the facility. He was knifed in the stomach.
At Hospital Calderón Guardia a man died Monday after having been in the care of physicians since Saturday. He was brought in from El Carmen de Guadalupe.
He also was a knife victim.
A 34-year-old man was admitted to Hospital San Juan de Dios Tuesday after having been the victim of a holdup attempt in San Cayetano in San Sebastián. He was headed to work around 5 a.m. when confronted by three men.
Finally police officers nabbed two teens, 15 and 16, also Monday night after a woman
was threatened with death in Goicoechea and relieved of her cell telephone, said police. The teens carried knives that clearly were designed for kitchen use.
