Junk cars go to social agencies

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes said it has donated 1,343 vehicles impounded by the Policía de Tránsito to various social welfare organizations this year. The value of the junk cars is about 40 million colons, about $76,000.

The cars, trucks and motorcycles generally are not reclaimed by their owners because the traffic fines assessed for various violations exceeds the ability of the owner to pay.

The ministry said that it is holding 30,000 vehicles and about 80 percent of the owners will not redeem them. Even if the vehicle is not junk when it is confiscated, it soon becomes that while languishing in the impound lot.

Impound lots are full of cars that never have been claimed.
