Expats who do not have their papers in order could end up in the immigration lockup in Hatillo. That would not be a good development. The DefensorÌa de los Habitantes said Wednesday that the place is a mess.
Technically the lockup is called the Centro de AprehensiÛn para Extranjeros en CondiciÛn Migratoria Irregular.
The toilets and sinks were found to be in bad shape and the cells were deteriorated and lacked ventilation, said the report. There were insufficient beds in the lockup, said the DefensorÌa. In the male section there were 63 persons with 12 beds, it added. In all, the inspection found 105 persons in the lockup, and 52 were Cubans, said the DefensorÌa.
