Drug raid uncovers bird-fighting ring

Chicken fights are not just a rural blood sport. Fuerza Pública officers said they found 26 birds at a ring for bird fights when they entered a property in León XIII, Tibás,

The bird-fighting operation was associated with drug dealers, said the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública.

Fighting birds is illegal in Costa Rica, but it is part of a long Latin American tradition. The ministry also said that its officers found implements for fighting. These would include spurs to make the roosters deadly.

Once again, when police entered the operation no one was there and there were no arrests. The birds were turned over to the Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal.

This bird will not be fighting.
