The central government said Monday that Banco de Costa Rica has earmarked $9 million in credit for environmentally friendly vehicles.
The bank is expected to finance 386 vehicles.
The cars are considered environmentally friendly because they emit 180 grams or less of carbon dioxide per kilometer, weigh 1,800 kilos or less and get at least 15 kilometers per liter of fuel.
Casa Presidencial said that Banco de Costa Rica will finance 80 percent of the purchase price for designated models. There also is a program whereby owners can surrender their older car, get a $1,250 credit that can be applied to the down payment.
The program has the support of the Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía, the Registro Nacional, the Instituto Nacional de Seguros and the Asociación de Importadores de Vehículos y Maquinaria.
