Four Fuerza Pública officers detained in pedestrian shakedown probe

Judicial agents detained four policemen Thursday on the allegation that they shook down a pedestrian on Avenida  Segunda Dec. 15.

The allegation said that the four officers stopped the pedestrian for questioning and a search. Police here do not require probable cause to order an individual to turn out pockets. Young men, particularly those not well dressed, are the usual target.

The Judicial Investigating Organization said that the Fuerza Pública officers did not find anything criminal, but then they demanded money from the pedestrian.

The shakedown victim did not have any money and suggested going to an automatic teller machine. But at 6:30 a.m. the machine was out of service. So the man surrendered his cell telephone to the officers, said the judicial report.

Judicial agents said they managed to trace the cell telephone to find the men.

One of the three detained police officers is going for a ride.
