The Ministerio de Seguridad Pública reported Monday that Cuban migrants continue to filter into the country. Police officers have detained 49 Cubans as well as nine persons from Ghana in the last week, said the ministry.
Law enforcement stepped up controls since March 17. A number of Cubans are stalled at the country’s southern border. They want to follow in the path of some 8,000 Cubans who managed to receive temporary immigration permission and then left the country for El Salvador, Honduras and México. They are seeking to enter the United States under a special program for Cuban migrants.
The central government is now turning away Cubans. Police have set up checkpoints at Puerto Cortez, Chacarita, Pavones and Barú. The Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas and the Servicio de Vigilancia Área are patrolling the Gulfo Dulce and territorial waters.
