Police officer with firearm surprises robbery suspect in Escazú

A robbery suspect came face-to-face with a gun-wielding off-duty Escazú police officer Thursday. Those at a Musmanni bakery had been robbed seconds earlier by a man with a sharp object and a woman.

The Policía Municipal de Escazú said the officer received word of the robbery and went into action. A video of the incident shows that the suspect was frustrated while he stood in the street under the gun of the police officer. That lasted for a few minutes until uniformed officers arrived, got him to the ground and placed the suspect in handcuffs.

The police officer was not identified and police did not say if the weapon he used was his own or one issued by the department.

Unlike many police agencies in the United States, most Costa Rican departments do not permit officers to carry firearms off-duty unless they buy them themselves. The woman suspect in the bakery robbery still is at large.
