The transport ministry is creating rules that will require that each container being exported by sea be weighed.
The proposal comes from the Transporte Terrestre y Seguridad Vial section of the Ministerio de Obras Pública y Transportes. Such a rule is required by international treaties.
The weight will be used by dock workers and the crew of ships to position safely the containers, said the ministry. The proposal, which will be converted into a presidential decree, has the support of the various exportation chambers.
The weight of each container will be logged in various places including on the ship that is involved. According to a treaty agreement, the rule must be in force by July 1.
