Police said they stopped five persons who were robbing tourists

Fuerza Pública officers detains five men Sunday as suspects of robbing tourists in  Manzanillo, Cahuita and Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast.

There were four adults and a 16 year old.

The suspects were occupants of a vehicle police stopped in Westfalia  on Ruta 36. Police officials said that the car matched the description of a vehicle being used by the robbers.

Police in the  Grupo de Apoyo Operacional searched the vehicle and came up with two unregistered revolvers, police officials said. Also found were cell telephones, a gold chain, purses, watches, money and other jewelry, said police.

The arrest was credited to a victim who reported the crime quickly.

Police have the coastal highway under close watch. They also turn up frequently individuals transporting drugs and items smuggled from Panamá.

On the other side of the country, the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública also reported over the weekend that police pressure continued in Playas del Coco and in Tamarindo. From April 1 until May 16 122 persons have been stopped on drug charges, the ministry said. The effort involved the ministry’s Fuerza Pública, the  Policía de Fronteras, the Servicion Nacional de Guardacostas and even the Servicio de Vigilancia Aérea.

The ministry said that 13 persons were detained for being in violation of immigration laws and that there also were arrests for violating the alcohol laws and for motor vehicle violations.
