The U.S. Embassy will be bathed in the rainbow colors signifying the gay and lesbian movement.
That will take place at dusk Tuesday during an official ceremony, the embassy announced Thursday. Staffers there already said May 26 that the rainbow flag symbolizing sexual diversity will fly over the Pavas complex through the month of June.
The embassy announcement said that members of the Costa Rican lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersexual communities have
been invited for the event.
The purpose, according to the announcement, is to emphasize U.S. support for human and civil rights.
The U.S. State Department has been particularly sensitive to the rights of members of these groups.
An embassy spokesman was not able to confirm last month that other nearby U.S. embassies also were flying the rainbow flag. However, A.M. Costa Rica has been able to determine that at least some were elsewhere in the world.
