Consumers asked to buy sea food responsibly

MarViva, the ocean protection organization, is embarking on a new campaign to encourage the purchase of food in a way that is consistent with the environment and responsible.

The organization said that fishermen are only part of the problem in the over exploitation of sea creatures. It said that consumers should think each time they acquire a product that the sea creature is an adult and that it is not in danger of extinction.

The organization has developed a smartphone app that will help with the decision, it said.  The app is free HERE through the iTunes network.

MarViva quoted the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization saying that 57 percent of sea species are fully exploited and that 30 percent are over exploited.
