News story prompts police promise

Nothing generates a quicker response from police than a negative news story.

The Spanish language daily La Nación reported Thursday morning that extortionists still are working the neighborhoods of Alajuelita, a low-income canton between San José Centro and Escazú.

This is a continuation of the problems that have plagued the area.

Quickly the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública promised to root out the problems and arrest those responsible. The ministry praised those victims who filed formal complaints and urged others to do so.

In the past there has been at least one murder of a man who resisted the extortion and filed a complaint.
