Placing Virilla bridge girders means closing the road

Motorists for miles have been tearing their hair out because of the constant delays at the bridge over the Río Virilla between La Uruca and Heredia.

As part of a widening project, the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes is adding lanes to the bridge. But to do so, the span has to be closed.

The ministry said Thursday that the road would

be closed from 10 p.m. Thursday night until 4 a.m. today and again for the same period starting at 10 p.m. tonight.

The contractors are moving the girders that will hold up the new road into place.

The girders are 20 meters long and three meters wide, said the ministry.

The closing will be repeated for yet another big girder June 18 at the same time, said the ministry.
