Quake hits northwestern Nicaragua

Two strong earthquakes hit northwestern Nicaragua Thursday night. One was at 9:25 p.m. with a 6.1 magnitude, and the second was three minutes later with a 5.1 magnitude, according to the Red Sismológica Nacional de Costa Rica.

The epicenter of the quake was 17 kilometers east of the Puerto Morazán, said wire service reports. The location appears to be very close to Nicaragua’s border with Honduras.

Early reports said that a church had been damaged but that there were no human casualties.
