Swiss line plans two weekly direct flights

The Swiss airline Edelweiss says it will offer for the first time in May 2017 direct flights between Zurich and Juan Santamaría airport in Alajuela.

The airline will schedule two flights a week, it said Monday. The airline is a member of the Lufthansa Group.

Costa Rica officials were happy. About 300,000 persons enter Costa Rica from Europe each year by air, and the direct flight makes their trip quicker and easier. Outgoing travelers will not have to concern themselves with U.S. Immigration rules which generally require visas for Costa Ricans even if they are just passing through a U.S. airport.

The flights to Switzerland will be red eye. The Tuesday flight will leave at 11:35 p.m. and the Friday flight is scheduled to leave at 6:20 p.m.
