Turrialba produces a series of new eruptions and spews ash again

The Turrialba volcano erupted at least nine times since late Sunday. The eruptions ended a quiet spell for the mountain.

Coincidentally the eruptions took place on the first day of a meeting of Latin American earthquake and volcano experts at the Wyndham San Jose Herradura Hotel.

The Red Sismológica Nacional listed eruptions at 11:58 p.m. Sunday, and at 1:18 a.m., 1:59 a.m., 3:42 a.m., 3:47 a.m., 6:43 a.m., 6:53 a.m., 11:57 a.m. and 2:42 p.m. Tuesday.  There were only a few photos of the events because of the cloudy conditions at the peak of the volcano.

The winds were to the west and southwest with ash falling in Cartago, Curridabat, Guadalupe, Coronado and other points north of the metro area, according to the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica at Universidad Nacional.
