A series of weekend arrests have illuminated the crack cocaine problem.
The Fuerza Pública reported that it confiscated nearly 1,500 crack rocks. The bulk of the confiscations were in Cartago where in two separate cases, police found 885 and 144 crack rocks.
They picked up 460 rocks more in an arrest on the coastal highway in the province of Limón.
Crack rocks are in the realm of the low-budget
drug user. Each sells for about 1,000 colons now, and crack cocaine is a good way to market the large quantities of cocaine that come into the country in exchange for logistical support for smugglers. Fuel for drug boats frequently is paid in kilos of cocaine.
Confiscation of crack cocaine is not unusual. Youngsters as young as 8 can be encountered smoking crack cocaine in some areas of the capital.
But the number of crack rocks confiscated this weekend point out the enormity of the drug problem and the size of the local market.
