Members of the New Mexico National Guard are in training at the Escuela Nacional de Policía in nearby Murciélago, but they were able to take off for a day to clear land where a school is to be completed.
The soldiers are members of the First Platoon, 919th Military Police Company, based in Farmington, New Mexico. The state and Costa Rica have a long-running assistance agreement, in part because some of the National guard members speak Spanish.
The chopping of weeds took place on the grounds of the uncompleted school at Cuajiniquil, said a release by the National Guard.
Workers began building the school 10 years ago, but stopped for financial reasons, said the release.
Some 154 local students are instructed in one large room elsewhere. The clearing of the property is in anticipation of construction work starting again soon, said the release.
