The health ministry is authorizing a seal for products that have been fortified. Food firms produce products such as salt, flour, sugar, corn flour, rice and milk that are fortified with vitamins and other beneficial chemicals. Fortifying many of these products is mandatory under the law.
The new seal is voluntary but firms that opt to use it
will have to follow rules set down by the Ministerio de
Salud. There will be inspections.
The fortification of products and the use of the seal to some extent is a marketing decision, although the mandatory addition of such substances as folic acid and iodine are know to improve public health.
