The metro area bands, a band from Guanacaste and one from Switzerland are joining to present concerts over the next week.
Most will be in Parque Morazán downtown, but performances also will be in Santa Cruz and Liberia.
The week of bands climaxes Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. with a concert in the Teatro Nacional at 8 p.m. Performing then will be the Banda de Conciertos de San José and the visiting Landwehr Band of Fribourg, Switzerland.
Landwehr points out on its Web site that it is the official music group of the canton and city of Fribourg and that its first concerts were held in 1804.
The 90 musicians who form the orchestra today are the latest in a long line, it said, adding that the people of Fribourg have traditionally been singers and musicians, and the members of the Landwehr share that heritage.
The first performance is at 10 a.m. Saturday in Parque Morazán featuring the band from Switzerland.
The Banda de Conciertos de San José performs Sunday at 11 a.m., also in the park.
The Landwehr Band and the Banda de Conciertos de Guanacaste perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Coopeguanacaste convention center in Santa Cruz.
Monday the Landwehr Band and the Banda de Conciertos de Guanacaste perform at the Catholic church in Liberia at 8 p.m.
Wednesday the Banda Avanzada of the Instituto Nacional de Música will be featured at 5 p.m. in Parque Morazán. Thursday the Banda de Conciertos de Alajuela will perform in the same place at noon.
Saturday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m., the Banda de la Municipalidad de San José will march through the city streets and perform at Parque Morazán.
All but the performance in the Teatro Nacional are free.
The visit by the Swiss band is sponsored by the Swiss Embassy, the Fundación Suiza para la Cultura Pro Helvetia, the government of Fribourg and commercial enterprises.
