Judicial agents and tactical police conducted 23 raids early Thursday to detain 19 persons, mostly in the Guápiles region. They are accused of being part of a drug gang that also dabbled in murder.
The Judicial Investigating Organization said that the case began in June 2015 when a man was gunned down at his fruit stand on Ruta 32 in Guápiles.
During the murder investigation, agents reported that they became aware of the drug distribution network based in that town.
Although most of the raids were in Guápiles, there was one arrest in San José, and nine other persons involved in the case already are in prison facing other charges, said agents.
Agents said the confiscated weapons, 10 million colons in cash and a stash of fake currency.
