30,000 spectators reported at southern zone arts festival

The culture ministry said that 30,000 spectators enjoyed the Festival Nacional de las Artes 2016 during its first weekend.
The festival began Friday in Ciudad Neily, Golfito and some nearby towns.

A sponsor of the festival along with the ministry is the Junta de Desarrollo Regional de la Zona Sur. The development agency reported a spike in visits to the Depósito Libre Comercial de Golfito it runs. Some 600 artists are scheduled to make presentations during the run of the festival.

An agency of the Universidad de Costa Rica has 40 staffers in the area to count and record the visits by spectators, said the ministry. In the past the festival mainly has been in the metro area, and the ministry said that residents of the southern zone expressed their gratitude for the event taking place there instead of  341 kilometers or about 211 miles away.
