The arrival of sea turtles on the Caribbean coast means free meat for some residents. Crew members of the Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas managed to save one turtle from hunters in the Pacuare section of Limón province. They made two arrests and liberated the turtle.
Last week they managed to liberate four captured sea turtles that were headed for slaughter, they said.
But police and members of the Guardacostas have been too late in other cases. One motorist was found carrying turtle meat in his car last week, and a similar batch of turtle meat was confiscated from the refrigerator of a Limón bar.
Of course there is a continual fight to reduce the illegal sale of turtle eggs.
In another animal-related development over the weekend, Fuerza Pública officers reported they rescued a cougar cub whose mother had been shot by illegal hunters in San Gerardo de Santa María de Dota.
