False document land scam leads to arrest

Judicial agents said Thursday they had detained a man who sold a piece of property to two different people even though he did not own the land.

The arrest was at the 45-year-old man’s home in Desamparados de Alajuela.

The property was in the La Fortuna area. The would-be buyers paid 8 million and 9 million colons for the land. They discovered they had been scammed when they found someone else living on the land as the owner, said the Judicial Investigating Organization.

This happened last November and December, agents said. The allegation is the use of false documents.

Agents said the man created false documents to falsely show he was the owner of the property.
