Mom’s Day is a public holiday with 3-day weekend

The country is on the brink of another three-day holiday. Monday is El Día de la Madre. The day honoring mothers is just slightly less important than Christmas in the eyes of many Costa Ricans.

Public offices and embassies will be closed, although some stores will be in high gear.

This is a time of solid sales as adult and young children rush to purchase an appropriate gift for Mom.

The economic’s ministry’s consumer divisionis expected to report today that prices have crept up due to the demand.

Restaurants are expecting a good business Monday, although taxi drivers have said they will stage one of their blockades that day.

Highway officials expect many in the Central Valley to spend all or part of the weekend at the beaches. They will make Ruta 27, the Caldera highway, one way east from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday to accommodate vacationers. Those headed west will have to use alternate routes. The route will be closed completely an hour before and after as traffic police install and remove appropriate signage and traffic cones.
