Olympic committee officially adds surfing to the 2020 games

As expected, the International Olympic Committee has added surfing to the list of sports for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

That was reported by the International Surfing Association as it prepares to inaugurate the World Surfing Games in Jacó Saturday.

“This is a game-changing moment for surfing,” said Fernando Aguerre. “We are already seeing increased popularity of the

sport across the world and the Olympic Games will provide an incredible platform to further showcase surfing and its core values. With its unique and modern blend of sport performance, style and youth culture, surfing will help deliver something special to the games.” He is president of the surfing association.

The international committee voted and made its decision in Río de Janeiro where the 2016 Olympic Games are about to begin. The decision was expected.

The decision means, of course, that Costa Rica’s top surfers will have berths at the 2020 games.
