Dear A.M. Costa Rica:
Besides showing itself to be unwinnable, the war on drugs degrades society. For a country that prides itself on human rights, Costa Rica has sided with the world’s biggest bully. It is time to stop the hypocrisy of punishing drug pushers, most of whom are as poor as their customers.
Costa Rica should follow the enlightened lead of Portugal and legalize all drugs, not just marijuana. Legalization would reduce prison populations, provide a robust taxable industry and enable those people who need drug treatment to seek it within the national health system. Moreover, promoting the cultivation of quality hemp of both kinds would help the economy by providing employment in rural areas that are now stagnating.
