Training is today for locating the lost

Soon getting lost in Costa Rica will be harder.

The Cruz Roja and the Dirección General de Aviación Civil will be training rescue personnel today in the use of a satellite tracking system.
Also being trained are members of the Cuerpo de Bomberos and Fuerza Pública.

The Cruz Roja has special rescue units who are called into service when a hiker or tourism group fails to return. Costa Rican forests are vast and challenging. They also can be confusing to newcomers.

The tracking system is similar to that used on aircraft. In fact, aircraft rescue will be included in the training. Costa Rica still holds some unlocated aircraft wrecks.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration operates a worldwide alert system.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been operating the system since 2001.
