University council opposes trawling

The council of  Universidad Nacional in Heredia has urged lawmakers to reject a bill that would reestablish trawling for shrimp in Costa Rica.

The trawling concept got an adverse ruling from the Sala IV constitutional court, but the central government and President Luis Guillermo Solís are trying to circumvent the court ruling with a new bill.

Trawling damages the coral and also sweeps up many unwanted fish.

The university’s decision was reported by Fundación MarViva, which also opposes shrimp trawling.
